Pinterest Bookmarklet Update May 2012

Recently Pinterest made a few changes to their bookmarklet, which in turn affects my “Pin It” button plugin’s popup if the button style “user selects image” is selected.

I noticed three major changes to the popup window:

  1. When hovering over each thumbnail, a white “Pin It” button appears.
  2. Images less than 150 pixel height or width are now included in the popup grid for selection (or was it less than 200 pixels).
  3. The description text now defaults to the image tag’s TITLE attribute. It used to be blank. However, it will still default to any selected text by the user which was the same behavior as before.

Below is a couple examples and a before and after of my wife’s photography blog.

Here’s the popup image selector before the May 2012 updates. Notice small images/thumbnails from the post itself aren’t included.

Here’s the popup image selector after the May 2012 updates (click for full screen). Many more images now mainly because of the small images/thumbnails from the post are getting included.

Finally here’s the description defaulting to an image’s title attribute.

The changes for #2 and #3 can be good or bad depending on how your site is setup.

You definitely want to fill out the title attribute for SEO reasons. And on this site I’ve been using the plugin SEO Friendly Images to automatically populate the title attribute with the name of the image. But I may have to re-think this as it’s been appending a number on it (since that’s how the file is named).

Besides those three changes, I think the bookmarklet also has updates related to pinning from YouTube, Vimeo and Flickr, but I haven’t fully tested them out.

If you’ve found anything else please post in the comments.

Pin Count Tool Launched

Need to quickly get a pin count for a few websites or posts?

Check out the new Pin Count Tool

It’s not a WordPress plugin, but one is in the works that gives you a pin count per post among other things.

Join the mailing list to be updated when it’s ready.

Note that Pinterest currently counts each variation of a URL separately, so the 4 most common are simply added up to give you the total.

For example, if you enter in pinterest.com, you’ll see this URL breakdown at the bottom.

Pin Count Bubble Added (and more)

Pin Count Bubble Added (and more)Version 1.3.0 of the “Pin It” button plugin is here!

And it has a Pin Count bubble!

If you didn’t already see the update in your WordPress dashboard, just search for “Pin It Button” on your plugins page.

Make sure you grab the one by me (pderksen) with “Pin It” in quotes. Someone else cooked up a plugin with the same name. Pin Count Bubble Added (and more)

Here’s a video explaining how to install the plugin.

Along with the pin count it now lets you specify a pre-selected image, URL and description.

The tricky thing was showing a pin count while still keeping the user selection popup mode. Pinterest only offers the pre-selected image with pin count option in their embed code.

I had some beta testers try it out and hopefully most major bugs are squashed, but if you find any or have any features to suggest head over to User Support & Feature Requests.

I’ll be updating the Custom CSS examples to help people line up the button with other popular sharing plugins.

The official FAQ should also help with resolving most issues.

Other than that, I moved the “Follow” button widget to another plugin. Just search for “Pinterest Follow”.

Disable Pinning On Any Page or Website

I just noticed Pinterest created a feature to disable pinning on any and/or all pages on your site. All you do is add this “meta” tag to the header of the pages you want to disabled pinning on.

Disable Pinning On Any Page or Website

Now any time tries pinning an image on the page via the bookmarklet or by adding it by URL on Pinterest.com, it’ll popup a message like:

“This site doesn’t allow pinning to Pinterest.”

Note any “Pin It” button on the page will still work. We’ll have an update soon that will address hiding the button on a per page/post basis.

In WordPress you can use the Meta Tag Manager plugin to do this if you want it for your whole site.

To see Pinterest’s official explanation of this go to Pinterest Help and look down towards the bottom. You should see the question:

“What if I don’t want images from my site to be pinned?”

Pin It Button Display Options Added

Pin It Button Display Options AddedMore display options are finally here for the Pinterest “Pin It” Button WordPress plugin!

Now you can choose to display or hide the button on your home page, posts, pages and/or archives.

I also added the shortcode “pinit” so you can place a button anywhere inside your content.

If you already have the plugin installed, you should see the option to update it in your WordPress admin dashboard.

If you’d like to install it, simply search for “Pinterest Pin It” in your WordPress admin (under Plugins > Add New).

As always I’d love to get your feedback. Let me know what’s working and what you’d like to see in future releases in the user support & feedback forum.

Oh and if you could do me a favor and add a rating for my plugin I’d really appreciate it. That way more people will see it, which means more feedback, which means more plugin updates.

Find All Pins of Your Website’s Images

Want to find all the pins of your website’s images on Pinterest?

Currently in the search bar on Pinterest, typing in a domain name doesn’t bring up the desired results. At least not for me.

Today I discovered the “/source/” addition to Pinterest URLs. All you do is tack on your domain name after http://pinterest.com/source/. The results appear to be all pins linked somewhere within that website.

Let’s take my wife’s photography blog as an example. Remove the “http://” and “www.” and the Pinterest URL for all pins linked to her site is:

http://pinterest.com/source/derksenphotographyblog.com/

If you’re interested in finding all pins and boards within Pinterest that link to images on your site, do a search on Google with the “site:pinterest.com” syntax plus your domain name (again omit the “http” and “www”). Example:

site:pinterest.com derksenphotographyblog.com

It’s not as visual as Pinterest of course, but it’s a quicker way to get right to the boards containing pins to your site.
